Best Concert Ukulele – The Basics

best concert ukuleles (2022)

Before talking about the Best Concert Ukulele, we must say that Concert ukuleles are the second smallest of the ukulele family – they’re only 2 inches longer than the sopranos.

That 2-inch difference makes the concert ukulele a very respected choice among Ukulele players, mostly in more advanced levels, where music turns a little bit more complex.

The sound of this model is still crisp, high, and reminiscent of the most famous Hawaiian tunes – but the range is a little wider thanks to the bigger body and more comfortable frets.

You’ll be able to play notes in the C6 range easily and take full advantage of the standard tuning.

We love the concert ukulele, which is more suitable for adults and people who can’t play comfortably, especially if they want to keep the portability.

However, you must pay attention to a couple of things while picking a concert ukulele.

1 # – Some ukuleles marketed as concerts are not really a Concert Ukulele!

Although rare, we’ve noticed that some stores with not-so-bad reputations have been passing sopranos as concerts – since the difference is small, it’s not discernible to beginners’ eyes.

But that’s not all!

Some brands have also increased the price of concert ukuleles incredibly by over 2 inches, and that value is not worth paying in most cases.

best beginner concert ukulele

2 # – The Concert Ukulele might still not be big enough for you

The difference between the soprano and the concert is noticeable in terms of sound and ease of play.

However, people with big hands could still have some trouble playing this one comfortably – that’s why the tenor ukulele has gone mainstream in the last years!

In this review, we’ve curated a list of the Best Concert Ukuleles to just the Top 6 ones you can get in the different price ranges.

You’ll find ukuleles suitable for kids, big-handed adults, beginners, intermediate, advanced, and professional performers– all of them being the best in each category.

Without further ado, let’s get into the world of the Best Concert Ukuleles!

The first pick is from Kala brand, once again taking the spotlight of our best overall pick.

This concert ukulele is made out of Koa, which is among the best woods to make ukuleles, and the traditional material used in Hawaii.

It also has a mahogany neck, a solid rosewood fingerboard, and NuBone graph tech saddle, nut, and NuBone strings.

This one comes with a beautiful gloss finish that’s worth boasting about.

The playing experience you get from this Koa ukulele is immaculate – their concert ukulele sounds are clear, crisp, has a nice range, and improved projection.

Thanks to its construction and high-quality materials, it also has better sustain of warmer notes.

This is among the top acoustic Concert Ukuleles we’ve ever played – and we’ve played hundreds!

We highly recommend this pick for an intermediate, advanced, and professional ukulele player who wants to invest in a high-quality ukulele under the $500 mark.

Aside from that, we don’t think this is a good pick for beginners or children – it would be like giving a Lamborghini to a student driver.

Pros – about this ukulele

  • Amazingly clear sound, perfect projection, and a wide range with slightly better-sounding basses.
  • Perfect materials and craftmanship – it’s among the most beautiful instruments on the list.
  • Affordable when compared to other more expensive Concert Ukuleles of similar quality.
  • Awesome pick for intermediate, advanced, and pro musicians looking for a near-perfect acoustic ukulele.

Cons – about this ukulele

  • It’s pricey.

The Cordoba 15CM is an amazing model of this line – there are sopranos, tenors, and baritones too.

We love this ukulele because, although it’s part of the entry-level line from Cordoba, they are incredibly sound, solid, and offer a sound quality that’s above its value range.

This is mostly because of its amazing craftmanship – although the body is made out of cheaper Mahogany, and the rosewood neck and fretboard, you can notice the handmade attention to detail.

It also comes with premium Aquila strings.

This is certainly an outstanding entry-level concert ukulele, we’d even pay more for it.

Still, it comes at a very affordable value despite its quality.

We highly recommend this one for kids and beginners alike.

Keep in mind that you’ll have to invest in some accessories, like another set of spare strings, a gig bag, and a strap with pegs.

Although there are other bundles similarly priced that come with all that, they’re not nearly as good as this instrument on its own.

That’s mostly because the instrument they come with sucks and the value is more because of the addons.

The best part is that you could check each addon individually and spend less than $30.

Pros – about this ukulele

  • The top instrument for its price range – it’s as good as any intermediate instrument out there, but at a much more affordable price.
  • It has simple, but effective craftsmanship with good attention to detail.
  • Its sound quality is amazing for the ukulele in this cost range.

Cons – about this ukulele

  • It doesn’t come with addons, just the ukulele.

This is yet another amazing instrument from Cordoba brand.

This one is part of Cordoba’s premium line and it’s also made out of Koa wood, with a Pau Ferro fingerboard, mother of pearl inlay, and real inlaid fret markers.

We placed this ukulele as a runner-up because we fell in love with its sound quality – but that’s not all.

The Cordoba 28C is a beautiful instrument that’s more than worth its value.

You can notice a big difference between this and the budget pick from the same brand.

The details and the craftsmanship put into this one exceeded our expectations easily – we were expecting something more beginner-friendly.

This one is better than the first pick in terms of aesthetic details – once again Cordoba’s craftsmanship is impeccable.

It’s close in quality of sound to the one at the top.

There are just a couple of downsides that left it in the runner-up spot.

The first one is that the ukulele has a rather narrow neck, so it’s definitely not beginner-friendly.

The other downside is that its action needs some adjustments to lower it down a little bit.

However, this is an excellent ukulele worth of intermediate and even professional hands.

Highly recommended!

Pros – about this ukulele

  • Beautiful build and details. Its craftmanship is a statement of Cordoba’s attention to detail.
  • Top-notch materials. This is a solid instrument neatly put together that will last a lifetime.
  • The price is significantly lower.

Cons – about this ukulele

  • It’s not beginner-friendly and it needs some adjusting on arrival.

  • ♫ The solid mahogany body allows the warm tone to deliver fully. It used BT junction technology which could adjust string height and then take well hand feeling for a good musical instrument.

We love Enya’s ukuleles – mostly because they always have modern designs that are always interesting, although we usually prefer traditional designs.

With personal preferences aside, the Enya EUC-MAD is a proper pick under $200 because of its many advantageous features:

  • An all-solid mahogany body that allows for much better sound quality than overlaminate mahogany.
  • It comes with a glossy body that’s beautiful and a regular neck for an easier slide while playing.
  • You get a high-quality NuBone nut and saddle.
  • It comes with strap buttons and a gig bag (no straps though).
  • Its price is reasonable – it’s definitely the top concert ukulele for its price range.

This is a great pick for ukulele players of all levels, although it’s a little too much for absolute beginners.

Although we frown at the sight of colored ukuleles, this one looks beautiful – we love the color.

There are no major concerns, this ukulele comes ready to play.

You might want to change the strings for better ones and then wait a while to let the strings settle.

After that, you’ll have a stunning instrument that’s always ready to go.

Highly recommended!

Pros – about this ukulele

  • Solid all-mahogany build that lasts and a design that’s beautiful to look at from any angle.
  • Its sound quality is much better when compared to other instruments in the same value range.
  • It’s fairly priced for its quality, it comes with a ukulele gig bag, and strap buttons.

Cons – about this ukulele

  • No downsides.

  • Back and sides: Hawiian koa

This ukulele from Kala is an impressive reminder that they make more than affordable ukuleles.

Just like the first pick and the runner-up, this beauty is made out of solid Koa.

The design is not traditional, but it’s gorgeous to look at.

The most important aspect of this beauty is its sound quality.

Here’s what you get with those extra bucks:

  • A clear sound that’s unmatched by any of the other picks.
  • The acoustic sound is a little bit better than the first pick, but when plugged in, the sound is incredibly better – you could use it to record at a professional level!
  • It has an inbuilt tuner and sound control, so you can have more power over the sound quality.
  • It has little to no feedback – although this also depends on the quality of your whole setup.
  • We also noticed that it has a deeper bass range when compared to the other electric Concert Ukuleles on this list.
  • The in-built preamp has nice effects and EQ options.

This is probably the best professional concert ukulele you can get, without a doubt.

We love everything about it.

Even its cost is considerably lower when you compare it to others of slightly better quality that are up in the thousands.

The ukulele is a mid-range pro, so we are sure that depending on your skills, you can make it shine.

Highly recommended!

Pros – about this ukulele

  • Best quality within its price range – we’d pay more for this quality!
  • It has beautiful but simple aesthetical details
  • It has the top materials for ukuleles!

Cons – about this ukulele

  • It’s still the most expensive on the list.

Best Acoustic-Electric Concert Ukulele – Luna High Tide Koa Concert with Pre-Amp (concert ukulele bundle)

Luna High Tide Koa Concert With Pre-Amp
  • High-Tide ukes are crafted from exotic tropical hardwoods and soundhole framed by an abalone ring
  • The full moon at the first fret causes the abalone wave fret markers "rise" as they make their way up the fretboard towards the moon's pull
  • This beautiful Luna ukulele features a deep koa body, producing full, deep sound along with the instrument's concert body size

This one is from Luna’s High Tide Koa, a very interesting line that we’ve talked about in the past.

It’s a mid-range line of affordable ukuleles which includes acoustic and electric options and also several types of ukes.

It comes with a preamp, not an amplifier.

This particular pick is the Luna High Tide Koa Concert Ukulele with preamp (a great concert ukulele bundle), a sound choice that’s worth considering if you’re looking for an affordable intermediate/advanced ukulele option.

This is by no means a professional pick, but it has the right advantages to make it suitable for a ukulele player with experience.

What we love the most about this pick is the fact that it’s balanced.

This acoustic-electric concert ukulele offers nice sound quality that’s superior to most electric instruments in this value range.

It’s a good pick if you’re looking to record indie pieces.

Also, there’s no doubt that the Koa wood of this design shines brightly thanks to its natural appearance, along with the cutaway that adds a modern touch to its appearance.

Its cost is right in the middle of good quality and a premium pick.

We highly recommend this as a great option for beginner players who want to transition into an electric intermediate ukulele without disrupting their finances.

Pros – about this ukulele

  • Beautiful design that uses Koa – the OG material for ukuleles.
  • It offers a nice sound quality that’s superior to most ukes within this value range.
  • It’s a very durable pick.

Cons – about this ukulele

  • It’s a little pricey.

Frequently Asked Questions – Great Concert Ukuleles

Is a concert ukulele good for beginners?

Yes! The concert ukulele is a slightly different version of the standard ukulele.
It’s two inches longer, which makes each fret a little bit longer as well, and easier to play and switch between chords.
It’s more suitable for adults with bigger hands that are hard to accommodate in a standard soprano.

What is the difference between a concert ukulele and a regular ukulele?

The main difference is size – the standard soprano is two inches smaller than the concert ukulele.
It generally has a slightly bigger body as well, which adds to the resonation, sustain, range, and projection.
That’s the reason it’s called a concert ukulele – the bigger size helps project the acoustic sound much better.

Are concert ukuleles good?

This depends on the musician.
They are bigger, better for people with larger hands, slightly easier to play because of the bigger frets, and are affordable – that’s why they’re great for beginners.
But, they’re also more complex sound-wise than the standard soprano – making it a worthy challenge for experienced players.
All in all, we think this instrument is great because it’s a very balanced pick for musicians of all levels, just like the tenor.

Should I buy a soprano or concert ukulele?

This is a matter of personal preference.
The soprano is the standard pick, it’s an amazing ukulele for beginners, it has less projection, and is slightly simpler to learn.
The ukulele is a slightly more advanced pick that is still great for beginners, especially those with bigger hands, and intermediate players looking for a slightly fuller, louder sound with better projection.
Simply buy the one that suits your needs better!

best concert ukulele for intermediate player

Conclusion – Top Concert Ukuleles

The concert ukulele is an interesting variation of the standard soprano ukulele and it’s definitely one of our favorites.

It has great properties of the soprano along with the advantages of a slightly bigger body.

That includes a deeper, slightly warmer range that’s noticeable in electric picks, an improved projection in acoustic picks, and better playability because of the more comfortable frets.

Still, the punchy and crisp sound of a standard soprano is there, but louder.

That’s why it’s among the favorite ukuleles of professional musicians and performers, whether they are acoustic, electroacoustic, or solid body ukes.
